Strictly Business Report

The workplace has long been seen as a physical space – an office. There was even a popular, long running sitcom series – or mockumentary – highlighting the behaviours of a group of typical office workers, from office parties, ego clashes, cliques, boredom and inappropriate behaviours, as staff jostle for promotions and plan sales targets and projections.

The office by design has shaped company culture, with perks and practices that include some and exclude others.

With the Covid-19 pandemic, company culture has shifted from an office centric hub. Hybrid options and remote work have dispersed company culture to other spaces. It is true that many new employees have been interviewed and started new roles, and have been onboarded without ever stepping inside a company’s physical office location. Remote teams are now a feature, possibly a mainstay, but definitely not an aberration. Company culture is evolving and exists in new and other spaces, from the tools your staff and teams use at work to meet, connect and share work, to how we all learn new skills.

Work is undergoing a transformation. The new job selling points are:

  • Ability to work remotely
  • Feeling engaged by work
  • Having trusting teammates
  • Flexible work schedule to support a work-life balance and care for one’s family

Whether you are working for your company or another company, your hunger determines the hunt. If you are not hungry, then you won’t spot opportunities, chase new goals or seek another way. In all likelihood, you will wait to be fed. But if you are hungry….that’s a whole other level.

Take Your Business Off Pause. The twin threats to lives and livelihoods have cast leaders in new roles. The extraordinary shock of Covid-19 means that there are implications for business, but there are also new opportunities. Smaller players can leap frog ahead of slower-to-adapt companies, with an innovative use of technology.

Let’s accelerate the movement. Let’s hear your view about the shifting company culture. Do you feel excluded by your company’s culture? Are there different job selling points that appeal to you? Are you part of a team that meets virtually? What technology are you using to improve connections?
